Can Components
Details & Specifications
Cans
When choosing a can for your product, there are two primary options:
- Aluminum cans with rounded "shoulders"
- Tinplate cans with square "shoulders"
Typically, the more elegant aluminum cans are chosen for premium products aimed at private consumers, such as food and cosmetics. In contrast, tinplate cans are often selected for more industrial products, such as paint or similar items.
Both types of cans can be filled with contents ranging from 200 to 1000 ml. Additionally, the interior of the cans can be treated as needed to suit the product being filled, such as food-grade lacquer or a lacquer resistant to acidic or alkaline products.
Prices and Lead Times
The price of aluminum cans fluctuates with the price of aluminum and is generally significantly higher than that of tinplate cans. Lead times are also typically much longer, as capacity must be pre-booked with the supplier, and delivery times can exceed 26 weeks from the completion of the final design.
Label / Print
The exterior of the can is defined by the label or print applied to it. At Aeropak, you can choose between:
- Label
- Lithographic print
For quantities over 100,000 units, lithographic printing can be an exclusive solution, offering a unique finish for the cans. Cans can also be delivered with either self-adhesive or glued-on labels. If you already have labels, we can apply them, provided we agree on the specifications in advance.
No Price Difference for Large Volumes
For orders of 25,000 units or more, the price per finished can is the same—whether you choose lithographic printing or a label solution. A labeled option is more flexible when it comes to potential graphic or textual changes. Smaller lithographic print runs can also be accommodated, but the price will be slightly higher than that of a labeled option.
Valve & Actuator
The valve's function is to keep the product contained within the can until it is activated by the actuator—typically through finger pressure. Valves come in a wide variety of types, as different products require specific options based on factors such as:
- Viscosity (thickness of the product)
- pH level (product's aggressiveness)
- Product application
Valve Choice Determines Spray Pattern
Companies may have varying preferences for how their product is dispensed—whether in a long stream, broad coverage, conical shape, or in drops. The choice of valve determines this. The interaction between the valve and actuator establishes the physical spray’s appearance and coverage. At Aeropak, you are free to select the valve best suited to your product.
Bag-On-Valve (BOV)
The Bag-On-Valve solution is particularly well-suited for viscous products where mixing of propellant and product is undesirable—for instance, cooking oils, liquid butter, and margarine. In a BOV system, the product is contained separately in a laminated aluminum pouch inside the can. The can is then filled with propellant, ensuring the product never comes into contact with the propellant.
This bag solution also allows for the filling of new products as an aerosol, potentially simplifying regulatory requirements for items such as pesticides.
Propellants
At Aeropak, we use the following types of gases for filling:
- Liquefied gases: LPG and DME
- Compressed (permanent gases): Atmospheric air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide
The Right Propellant Ensures Optimal Functionality
An aerosol can only function perfectly when filled with the correct propellant. However, the choice of propellant should consider not only functionality and user-friendliness but also factors such as:
- Environmental regulations
- Safety (fire and explosion risks)
- Bacteriology
- Contents of the can
These are parameters we have extensive knowledge of, allowing us to offer specific guidance tailored to your product.
Other
If you have specific requirements beyond the categories mentioned above, we are happy to have a no-obligation discussion about your particular needs.
For example, certain products may benefit from including a ball inside the can. This is particularly relevant for products where the contents separate over time, as shaking the can with an included ball helps to mix the product effectively.
